The following is a text with reflections that Sonia Leao wrote to thank her audience after a talk in Portugal.
I feel immense gratitude as I revisit the energy and warmth we shared in our conversation. The sparkle in each of your eyes, the curiosity, and the desire for growth I felt in the audience, inspired me deeply. This post is an extension of our meeting, a summary of the ideas we explored together, so we can take them home and cultivate them in our hearts.

Just as the poet Rumi reminds us, “You were born with wings. Why do you prefer to crawl through life?” The journey of personal growth begins with a simple, yet profound, realization: that each one of us carries within a seed of unlimited potential. Often, this seed lies dormant, buried under layers of fear, doubt, and past experiences. Think of a seed from a golden trumpet tree. On the outside, it is small and hard, but within it resides the promise of a majestic tree that will one day color the landscape with vibrant flowers. Our work is to nurture this seed, watering it with self-awareness and patience, and removing the stones that hinder its growth.
Life, like nature, presents us with seasons of sunshine and rain. Resilience is not the absence of storms, but the ability to flourish even in the midst of them. I remember the story of my friend Maria, a strong and warrior-like woman who came from a small village in the sertão (backlands) of Brazil. She told me that during droughts, the earth would crack and the sun would be relentless. But she learned from the cacti that store water in their leaves to find inner strength and adapt. Resilience, my friends, is like a coconut shell: it protects us on the outside but keeps us nourished and whole on the inside. We cultivate this strength by accepting our vulnerabilities and practicing self-compassion, reminding ourselves that it is in failure that we find the greatest opportunity for learning.
Many of us live on autopilot, acting and reacting without full awareness. The practice of mindfulness is an invitation to come home, to the present moment. It’s an invitation to be fully present in our lives, observing our thoughts and emotions without judgment. Imagine yourselves sitting by a river, watching the leaves as they float by. Each leaf is a thought. We don’t need to jump into the river and follow them; we can simply watch them pass, and they will continue their flow. Meditation is our boat, which allows us to observe the river of our mind, bringing clarity and inner peace, and helping us to discern what truly matters.
Personal growth culminates in the ability to express our essence and connect deeply with others. Creativity, whether in painting, writing, music, or the way we arrange our garden, is our soul speaking. It is our way of sharing the beauty that exists within us with the world. And love, in its purest form, is the most fertile ground where all this growth manifests. A marriage built on fidelity and partnership, for example, is not just the union of two people, but the union of two growth journeys, where each becomes the mirror of the other, reflecting and nurturing what is most beautiful.
Remember, the journey has no endpoint. It is a continuous blossoming. May you allow yourselves to grow, to blossom, and to share the unique light that each of you carries.
