Touching the Heart of Mindfulness

Ah, Mindfulness. The word echoes through our conversations, a trendy balm for our harried souls. Everyone says they love it, much like they profess a fondness for sunsets and quiet mornings. But how many of us truly stand at the precipice of that inner stillness, feeling its profound and transformative power?

In my 68 years, many spent navigating the brisk currents of the business world here in sunny South Florida, I’ve heard countless tales whispered amongst friends and acquaintances. Each a fleeting glimpse into what they perceived as Mindfulness.

There was dear Martha, a whirlwind of social engagements, who found her “Mindfulness” in the brief pause while sipping her morning latte, a moment to plan her busy day ahead. Then there was Robert, always chasing the next big deal, who believed his intense focus during negotiations was his version of being present. Young Emily, stressed from deadlines, downloaded a meditation app and declared herself “mindful” after a ten-minute guided session before bed, often drifting off to sleep before it concluded. My golf buddy, George, swore that the quiet concentration before his swing was his mindful moment, swiftly forgotten as soon as the ball was in flight. And sweet Carol, bless her heart, thought that simply being aware of her anxieties as they spiraled was the essence of this practice.

These glimpses, while perhaps well-intentioned, often skim the surface. They touch the edges but rarely plunge into the deep wellspring of true presence. For years, I, too, existed in this periphery, nodding along, perhaps even dabbling in a breathing exercise or two, never truly grasping the visceral truth of what it meant to be fully, exquisitely here.

My own journey into the heart of Mindfulness began not with a workshop or a book, but with a whisper of the divine in the quiet solitude of an early morning. It was during a period of quiet reflection, the Florida sun just beginning to paint the sky with hues of dawn, that I experienced something that shifted the very axis of my being. The air grew still, and a gentle warmth enveloped me, not of the sun, but of an inner radiance. In that luminous embrace, the clamor of my thoughts faded, replaced by an oceanic stillness. It was as if the veil between the mundane and the sacred thinned, and I felt a profound connection to something vast and eternal. This light, this palpable presence, felt undeniably…divine. It was not a vision, not a voice, but a pure, unadulterated knowing, an immersion in the boundless now.

In that sacred encounter, the true essence of Mindfulness unfurled within me. It wasn’t about stopping thoughts, but about gently acknowledging them as fleeting clouds in the vast sky of awareness. It wasn’t about escaping the present, but about embracing its richness, its textures, its subtle symphony of sensations. It was about that deep, unwavering connection to the very breath that animates us, a constant anchor in the ever-shifting tides of life.

Since that dawn-kissed awakening, my understanding of Mindfulness has deepened immeasurably. It’s not a technique to be mastered, but a way of being, a gentle returning to the sanctuary of the present moment, again and again. It’s in the savoring of a single sip of tea, the feeling of the earth beneath your feet, the warmth of a loved one’s hand. It’s in the quiet observation of your own heart, with kindness and without judgment.

My friends, I invite you to move beyond the surface. Let us together explore the profound depths of Mindfulness. It is not a destination to be reached, but a journey to be embraced, moment by precious moment. Come, let us breathe together, and discover the boundless peace that resides within the very heart of being present.
